Mainstem: Fawell Dam

The Fawell Dam is located across the mainstem West Branch of the DuPage River in the McDowell Woods Forest Preserve near Naperville. The existing dam is of earthen construction with three large movable gates which allow normal West Brach waters to flow through the dam. These gates are intended to be closed during flood events to prevent excess flow into Naperville. There are also flank levees constructed on both sides of the dam to protect adjacent residential areas.

Currently, the Dept. of Environmental Concerns is working with the Illinois Department of Natural Resources - Office of Water Resources to restore the dam to full operating conditions. The project will also bring the dam up to modern day dam safety regulations. Construction of this work is scheduled to begin in either late 1997 or Spring 1998.
